Niedersächsischer Verdienstorden
für Marron C. Fort
Ende September hat Dr. Marron C. Fort für sein außergewöhn-
liches Engagement für die Niederdeutsche Sprache den Nie-
dersächsischen Verdienstorden erhalten. Er ist der ehemalige
Leiter der Arbeitsstelle „Ostfriesisches Niederdeutsch und
Saterländisches Friesisch“ an der Universität. Fort widmet sich
der sprachwissenschaftlichen Erforschung und Dokumentati-
on der ostfriesischen und saterfriesischen Regionalsprachen.
Bekannt wurde er 2000 mit der Übersetzung des Neuen
Testaments, die damals erste Buchveröffentlichung in sater-
friesischer Sprache.
Forschungsnetzwerk DIVERSITAS
„
Die Globalisierung stellt klar abgrenzbare nationale Identi-
täten infrage und sorgt für neue, grenzüberschreitende Iden-
titätsentwürfe“, erklärt Prof. Dr. Martin Butler. Der Amerikanist
hat im Juni das internationale und interdisziplinäre Forschungs-
netzwerk DIVERSITAS (Diversity Studies International Teaching
And Scholarship Network) ins Leben gerufen. Es untersucht
die Dynamiken von Kulturkontakt und Kulturtransfer. Dabei
gilt das Interesse der WissenschaftlerInnen den kulturellen
und medialen Konsequenzen des Globalisierungsprozesses.
In dem Forschungsnetzwerk kooperieren die Universität Ol-
denburg, die University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg
(
Südafrika) und die University of Mumbai (Indien). Unter der
Federführung von Butler und Dr. Hendrike Lehnguth vom
Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik bringt es Lehrende
und Forschende der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften, der
Soziologie, Psychologie, Musikwissenschaft und der Gender
Studies zusammen.
Forschungsneubau NeSSy in Wechloy
Die Arbeiten an dem Forschungsbau „NeSSy“ auf dem Campus
Wechloy gehen voran. 2013 werden hier die Forschungszentren
Neurosensorik und Sicherheitskritische Systeme der Universität
Oldenburg einziehen. „Der Forschungsneubau bietet 80 neue
Arbeitsplätze und auch genug Raum für höchst spannende
Spitzenforschung. Die Universität Oldenburg bündelt in dem
Gebäude gleich zwei Forschungszentren, in denen Neurobi-
ologen, Mediziner, Psychologen, Physiker und Informatiker
gemeinsam arbeiten werden“, erläuterte der Staatssekretär im
Niedersächsischen Wissenschaftsministerium, Dr. Josef Lange.
Er sei überzeugt, dass der Erfolg bei der Exzellenzinitiative und
der Forschungsneubau die zukunftsweisende Ausrichtung
der Universität bekräftigten. In dem rund 2.200 Quadratmeter
großen Bau ist die Hälfte der Nutzfläche für Labore vorgesehen:
Dazu gehören Akustik- bzw. Hörlabore sowie Neurophysiologie-
Labore. Ein Konferenzzentrum wird die Kommunikation zwi-
schen den WissenschaftlerInnen unterstützen.
Bildung in Zentralasien ausbauen
Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Hochschulen in Zentralasien
und der Europäischen Union intensivieren: das ist Ziel des
Erasmus Mundus Projekts TARGET. Die Universität Oldenburg
ist eine von sieben europäischen Universitäten, die die EU im
support from the " Niedersächsischen Vorab" for their work.

for the next 18 months. The research programme "Die Nie-
dersachsenprofessur – Forschung 65+" was founded in 2008
as a joint programme of the State of Lower Saxony and the
Volkswagen Foundation.
Lower Saxony Order or Merit for Marron C. Fort
Dr. Marron C. Fort was awarded the Lower Saxony Order
of Merit at the end of September for his outstanding com-
mitment to Low German. He is the former director of the
University's department for "East Frisian Low German and
Saterland Frisian". Fort focuses on the research and docu-
mentation of the East Frisian language and Saterland Frisian
dialect. He gained recognition for his translation of the New
Testament 2000, the first book to be published in the Sater-
land Frisian dialect.
Research Network DIVERSITAS
“
Globalisation is calling clearly defined national identities into
question and creating new draft identities that transcend bor-
ders,” explains Prof. Dr. Martin Butler. Professor Butler, a specia-
list in American culture and languages, set up the international
and interdisciplinary research network DIVERSITAS (Diversity
Studies International Teaching And Scholarship Network) in
June. It examines the dynamics of cultural contact and cultu-
ral transfer, focusing on the ramifications of globalisation for
culture and media. In the research network the University of
Oldenburg cooperates with the University of Witwatersrand
in Johannesburg (South Africa) and the University of Mum-
bai (India). Under the leadership of Professor Butler and Dr.
Hendrike Lehnguth of the Institute of English and American
Studies, it brings together teachers and researchers from the
fields of Literature and Cultural Studies, Sociology, Psychology,
Musicology and Gender Studies.
The New NeSSY Research Building in Wechloy
Construction work on the “NeSSy” building on the Wechloy
campus is moving ahead, paving the way for Oldenburg
University's research centres for Neurosensors and Security-
Critical Systems to move in in 2013. “The new research building
will create 80 new jobs and provide plenty of space for exciting
top-level research. The University of Oldenburg is pooling two
research centres in the building, where neurobiologists, medics,
psychologists, physicists and computer scientists will work side
by side,” explains Dr. Josef Lange, Secretary of State for Lower
Saxony's Ministry of Science and Culture. He was convinced,
he added, that the success of the Excellence Initiative and the
new research building would underpin the University's future-
oriented approach. Half of the floor space in the new building,
which is some 2,200 square metres in size, will be used for
laboratories, including acoustic and hearing labs, as well as
neurophysiology labs. A conference room will foster commu-
nication between the scientists.
